The Richter Scales Debut Animated Video Of “I’ve Got Mail And I’ve Got It Made”
We’re big fans of The Richter Scales, the musical group that have brought us Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Here Comes Another Bubble, and gut-busting songs at the 2008 Crunchies and most recently the parody of Silicon Valley at the 2009 Crunchies a few weeks ago. The group is releasing an animated video of its song ‘I’ve Got Mail and I’ve Got it Made,’ which was one of the two songs The Richters sang at the first Crunchies in 2007. As you may remember, it’s about what happens to a guy when he follows the instructions in all the spam email he receives. Enjoy!

John Doerr On Bloom Energy Launch: “This Is Like The Google IPO”
about 2 weeks ago - No comments

After eight years of operating in quasi-stealth, Bloom Energy came out with a bang today at an event in Silicon Valley attended by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Colin Powell, Larry Page, John Doerr, and executives from eBay, Walmart, Coca-Cola, and FedEx. All of the big-name companies, including Google, are beta customers of Bloom’s distributed energy fuel cell technology (which was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile on Sunday and various other stories since then).
Doerr, the Kleiner Perkins VC who backed both Bloom and Google, said today: “This Is Like The Google IPO.” Except without the IPO part. Doerr was referring to the fact that, like Google, Bloom has kept its business close to its vest until it actually could show some progress in terms of customers and products. Five Bloom energy boxes about the size of a parking space each now provide 15 percent of the power at eBay’s campus. Walmart is testing the boxes in two locations where it is carrying 60 to 80 percent of the energy load of an entire store. Google co-founder Larry Page calls the technology a “very big deal” and looks forward to the day that it can expand the number of Bloom boxes Google uses to the point where it can power one of its data centers.

An Investment Bank That Cares? CODE Advisors Opens For Business
about 2 weeks ago - No comments
Former CEO of CBS Interactive Quincy Smith has joined with CBS Interactive EVP Michael Marquez and music industry veteran dealmaker Fred Davis to launch CODE Advisors, a new Silicon Valley and New York based investment bank.
As with all investment banks, CODE Advisors will look to advise companies on mergers and acquisitions and capital raising, for a fee. But the company also wants to be a long term partner for buyers and sellers, acting as a sort of outsourced business and corporate development group. This is something most banks promise, but few deliver on. Unless you’re a high velocity buyer like Google or Microsoft, in which case you get all the attention you want and more.

TeachStreet Launches Decision Engine For GMAT And GRE Test Takers
about 2 weeks ago - No comments

TeachStreet, Yelp-like service for real world classes (cooking, dog obedience, music lessons, ballroom dance, foreign language, golf, yoga, etc.), is getting into the standardized test prep space. Today, the startup is rolling out a partner promotion with Kaplan Test Prep, and a number of MBA/GMAT/GRE content providers.
TeachStreet, which serves seven metropolitan areas in the U.S. including New York City, Silicon Valley/San Francisco and Seattle, allows instructors to upload information about classes. Users can look for available classes, and read and write reviews on the course and the instructor. Currently, the site includes a selection of more than 150,000 classes and teachers, across more than 700 subjects and categories.
National Geographic on Silicon Valley in 1982: A Prototype of the Future [History]
about 2 weeks ago - No comments
The year is 1982. Michael Jackson’s Thriller’s climbing the music charts, E.T.’s in the theaters, and a patch of land dubbed Silicon Valley is catching notice. The drug-fueled, theft-filled, innovation-driven culture of it’s pulsating to the beat of the future.
That year, National Geographic printed an article called “High Tech, High Risk, and High Life,” playing on the key elements of the atmosphere. You can read the full article here, but two parts—two predictions—stood out from all the anecdotes of success. The first shows the significance of Silicon Valley then and now:
Befriending the computer, and putting it to work and play in daily life a decade before most of us found the courage to touch a keyboard, Silicon Valley and its families may well be a glimpse of a computer-and-communications culture that is the prototype of the future.
For most of us, it might be difficult to believe that there would’ve been a time when communication through phone and fiber lines wasn’t the norm—that it was almost intimidating—for people of our current ages. In Silicon Valley though, it was becoming as common as it is now. Nearly 30 years ago, that little area was already rushing toward everything we love and hate about technology today.
It was also developing into a place that would survive all the failures it would breed with every success story as a quote from Sal Accardo implies. He remarked that “Silicon Valley will continue to be the cerebrum, a magnet for creative minds.” Not so far off, was he? We still gravitate to that western corner of the United States for our newest gadgets, for the hottest in social media, and for the strangest of startups. Old as it is, Silicon Valley is still giving birth to another generation of wild kids with even wilder ideas.
I recommend reading the full article over at Modern Mechanix for a stroll down tech memory lane and a few giggles over the way we spoke of the future back then, it’ll bring an odd feeling of familiarity. [Modern Mechanix]

Changing Of The Guard: Jive Software Brings On New CEO
about 2 weeks ago - No comments
There’s a changing of the guard taking place at social software company Jive. Co-founder and CEO Dave Hersh will be stepping down from the role to allow board member Tony Zingale to take over as interim CEO. Hersh will continue at Jive as chairman of the company’s board of directors.
Zingale was most recently the president and CEO of enterprise company Mercury Interactive, which was acquired by HP. Prior to Mercury, he was President and CEO of CRM provider Clarify. Jive’s board of directors has begun a search for a permanent CEO, and is currently evaluating candidates for the position.
